Notre Dame football players arrested on drug, gun charges
On top of the five players that were arrested for a handgun & marijuana possession, Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler was also arrested during a separate incident on battery charges.
Details aren’t yet clear on what happened, but the incident took place at an off-campus bar near South Bend. After being pulled over, the officer detected an odor of marijuana, which led to a narcotics dog to sniff the vehicle. A drug dog was used to investigate the vehicle after the officer in question noted the smell of marijuana.
Five men were arrested Friday night in Peru, Ind. for possession of marijuana.
Redfield, Stepherson and Williams were also charged with possession of a handgun without a license.
Of those five players, Redfield is perhaps the most notable.
The St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office said Butler faced possible charges of resisting law enforcement and battery to a police officer, both felonies. Kevin Stepherson, sophomore running back? “The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged”, Browne said in a statement.
Butler could face two felony charges, but in court documents the state requested until Wednesday to make that decision after gathering additional facts in the case.
Redfield is a two-year starter at safety for the Irish, while Coney and Williams each saw action last year for Notre Dame.
But no SEC school in recent memory has had a night as bad as Notre Dame had on Friday night.
White, 19, of Clinton, Md., is a reserve cornerback.
WNDU reports Butler was expected to miss the beginning of the season while recovering from foot surgery.
Classes at Notre Dame begin next week.
Notre Dame’s football season is right around the corner, but it appears the Fighting Irish have other problems to worry about.
