Rio timeline of US swimmer scandal
The U.S. Olympic Committee now contradicts Lochte, a 12-time medalist.
Feigen was among four U.S. swimmers who Lochte said had been robbed at gunpoint by men posing as police officers at a gas station in Rio de Janeiro, a story that police maintain is false.
But police, citing surveillance video and witness accounts, said the encounter happened after the swimmers vandalized a gas station bathroom and were told to pay for the damage.
Two US Olympic swimmers involved in an alleged robbery incident with relay gold medal victor Ryan Lochte have had their passports released and have left Brazil, the US Olympic team said last night.
The swimmer’s lawyer said Feigen will donate $10,800 and leave the country Friday, according to NBC News.
He didn’t specify which charity would receive the donation.
Phelps arrived back in the United States on Wednesday after winning five gold medals and one silver in Rio.
Lochte’s teammate, Jimmy Feigen has agreed to pay roughly $11,000 so he can leave the country.
Afterward, Ryan Lochte, one of the standout American superstars, went so far as to go to the Brazilian police and claim that a man posing a police officer put a gun to his forehead and demanded the whole group’s wallets.
Lochte gave several interviews describing the robbery and had denied concocting a cover story to hide embarrassing behavior.
A Brazilian police official is telling The Associated Press that American swimmer Ryan Lochte fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro.
Lochte’s team-mates Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger landed in Miami on Friday after testifying about the alleged robbery.
Having paid, Blackmun said, they were permitted to leave. USA swimmers Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz, and Jack Conger were all forced to stay in Rio longer than they expected to and questioned by police on Thursday.
“. and the people of Brazil who welcomed us to Rio and worked so hard to make sure that these Olympic Games provided a lifetime of great new memories”.
The gas station is close to Olympic Park, where the sporting events have been overshadowed over the past two weeks by a series of muggings and robberies, including incidents involving other athletes and two visiting government ministers.
“The behavior of these athletes is not acceptable, nor does it represent the values of Team USA or the conduct of the vast majority of its members”, it said in statement Thursday.
Lochte returned to the United States before a warrant was issued for his arrest.
