Furyk makes history with 58 at Travelers
Furyk’s stunning score was one shot better than the previous tour record held by six players, including Furyk himself.
On the back nine, Furyk opened with three consecutive birdies to complete his string of seven straight, the longest streak on the PGA Tour this season. After two-putting from 24 feet at the par-3 fifth, Furyk birdied the final four holes on the front to shoot 8-under 27. 13 and 14 to give him the lead for good.
The 31-year-old joined Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott as the only two-time winners on the PGA Tour this season.
Afterwards Furyk couldn’t hide his joy at his moment of history.
“No one else can say they’ve done that out here on the PGA Tour”, Furyk said. “I know by winning this tournament it’s put (European Ryder Cup captain) Darren Clarke in a very hard position not to pick me”.
“It’s really special, and it’s probably going to take a little while for it to sink in and really put it into perspective”. If he stopped playing right now he would be closing with the lowest score ever shot on the PGA Tour, 58 this weekend.
“I’ll remember that one forever”, a delighted Knox said after his victory.
“It’s pretty cool”, Furyk told Sky Sports 4.
At that point he knew he only needed to finish par-par to make history. “I birdied 10, birdied 11, birdied 12 and then it becomes a mental struggle”.
Knox’s victory came a few hours after American Jim Furyk had shot the lowest round in PGA Tour history when he combined one eagle and 10 birdies for a 12-under 58.
The 2003 US Open victor had shared the previous record of 59 with six other players but has now created history all of his own.
“After shooting two over par yesterday, being a little confused with my game, that was the farthest thing from my imagination going out this morning, but got off to a great start and got in a great rhythm and just loved the way I was hitting the ball today”. When Knox shot 59 on the Web.com Tour in the second round at Boise, he still only managed a tie for 12th.
“Better not be opposite anything (on the Champions Tour)”, said Kelly, who gave Knox a hug as the victor made his way to the scoring trailer.
The 31-year-old began the day three shots behind overnight leader Daniel Berger but as the American fell back, Knox kept grinding away, turning in 34 and then opening up a two-shot lead with birdies on the 13th and 14th.
“Everybody dreams of making a putt on the last hole to win a tournament”, Knox said.
“These are three places that have absolutely adopted me and treat me and call my name and just make me feel like family and like it’s home”, said Kelly, 49, was also referring to Wisconsin and Hawaii as the other two places he’s been “adopted”.
Bubba Watson, last year’s Travelers victor, said the players were watching Furyk’s round in the clubhouse and people were keeping an eye on the round while warming up on the range. She was trying to become the second player to win the tournament and NCAA individual title in the same year. “It’s been an enjoyable ride”.
