Rio Olympics 2016: Jessica Ennis-Hill second in heptathlon, Johnson-Thompson third
30-year-old Ennis came into the event as defending champion after success at London 2012, however, there was fresh challenge this year from Beglium’s Nafi Thiam.
The long jump, javelin and finale of the 800m come tomorrow for the athletes, will it go down to the wire in the 800m, or will medals be decided before the final event of the day?
On Friday, Miller-Koch took 12th in the 100-meter high hurdles (13.56 seconds), which was the first heptathlon event of the day, then followed that up by taking 14th in the high jump (1.8 meters; 5.91 feet), 23rd in the shot put (12.91 meters; 42.36 feet), and 21st in the 200-meter dash (24.97 seconds).
Jessica Ennis-Hill looks set to retire from athletics in the wake of her heptathlon silver medal at the Rio Olympics after admitting she wants to leave the sport on a high.
But sadly, she lost out to Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam and took home an impressive silver medal instead.
For Thiam, the daughter of a Belgian mother and a Senegalese father, it was her first Olympic medal in her first Olympic Games.
Johnson-Thompson was in contention in the world championships previous year before three fouls in the long jump stopped her in her tracks and she looked similarly distraught after her shot effort.
The 30-year-old said she had nearly made up her mind over her future, but wanted to take her time over such a “huge decision”. “I’m definitely a more rounded person”. She went on to clinch gold last summer.
But she may find it hard to walk away from a chance to go for the top spot and retain her crown at the World Championships next year in London – the sight of that famous night four years ago when Ennis-Hill cemented her place in the hearts and minds of the British public.
“I’m pretty emotional but these are happy tears”, she said.
The Sheffield athlete went into the final event, the 800m, needing to run 9.47 seconds quicker than Thiam to make up a deficit of 142 points.
The Kenyan, whose world record run to win gold four years ago was one of the highlights of the Games, said: “I’m in good form, there’s no doubt about that”.
“I’m just proud to be back on the podium”.
“Yeah, it makes it harder with it being London next year”, she admitted. Interestingly enough, there was only a 10-second difference between Thiam and Ennis-Hill’s Personal Best’s, so we knew it would be a long shot for Ennis-Hill to take Gold.
There were no gripes about losing for Ennis, but a couple about the schedule.
“She had had two days of unbelievable performances”.
Within the hour, Welsh cyclist Becky James added another medal – a silver – in the women’s Keirin.
Matthew Hudson-Smith clocked 45.26 to qualify for the semis of the 400m in third place, but there was agony for European champion Martyn Rooney, who retained hope of going through as a fastest loser following a time of 45.60 until the last of the seven heats knocked him out. I might not do that event again, this event again.
