Singapore PM taken ill during speech
The Prime Minister of Singapore has collapsed during a live broadcast to his country on their National Rally Day.
Mr. Lee’s condition isn’t serious, his office said late Sunday via his official Twitter account.
An hour after the National Day Rally was suspended, PM Lee returned onstage; much to the delight of the audience, who welcomed him with a standing ovation.
“Thank you for waiting for me”.
The camera then panned to the audience and rustling was heard. “I gave everybody a scare”, Lee said, smiling.
“PM was feeling unsteady because of prolonged standing, heat and dehydration”. I think that’s what happened.
“His heart is fine and he did not have stroke”, it added.
Mr Lee was in the midst of delivering his English speech when the rally was stopped at around 9.20pm. “I never had so many doctors look at me all at once”.
Last year, he had surgery to remove his prostate gland. He also survived a bout of lymphoma in 1992.
Update 1: DPM Teo Chee Hean has spoken to PM Lee, and says that PM will resume his National Day Rally speech.
“Ministers or not, all of us are mortal”, he said, bringing up Mr Heng Swee Keat, who suffered a stroke in May. He outlined challenges for Singapore, and stressed the need for leadership succession, saying his successor needs to take over from him soon after the next general election.
