Six Notre Dame players arrested on Friday night in two incidents
Police found marijuana and a handgun during the traffic stop of the five Notre Dame players, according to Indiana State Police.
Redfield, starting safety, was one of five other players who were arrested Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, after Indiana State Police said a trooper stopped a vehicle in Fulton County about 35 miles south of South Bend for speeding.
Senior safety Max Redfield, sophomore linebacker Te’von Coney, sophomore running back Dexter Williams, redshirt freshman cornerback Ashton White and freshman wide receiver Kevin Stepherson were pulled over for a speeding violation Friday night, with the police report saying the auto was doing 73 miles per hour in a 60 mph zone. The trooper smelled marijuana, and a drug-sniffing dog confirmed marijuana was in the vehicle. “The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged”.
The other two players were Te’von Coney and Ashton White. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional charge of possession of an unlicensed handgun.
Notre Dame’s Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications, Paul Browne, issued a statement in response to these arrests. Given that the Notre Dame players were arrested for possession, they aren’t as likely to get away with just a slap on the wrist.
The football players were released on bond around 12:30 p.m.
A probable cause affidavit relating to Saturday’s arrest of Notre Dame senior CB Devin Butler details that authorities needed to use a stun gun on him after he punched and tackled a police officer.
Butler faces two potential felonies: resisting law enforcement and battery to a police officer. Butler remained held Saturday afternoon at the St. Joseph County Jail.
“The expectations we set for the members of our team are high, but they are especially so for the upperclassmen who are expected to provide leadership and a positive example to the other members of the team”, said Kelly. Coney was a backup linebacker last season who appeared in eight games during his freshman year.
Notre Dame had their final practice of fall camp on Friday.
