Cricket fans turned up at the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday to witness the ground staff digging up the outfield in an effort to irrigate it, to improve drainage.
West Indies reached 62-2 before lunch on Thursday with Kraigg Brathwaite 32 not out and Marlon Samuels undefeated on 4.
Only 1-3/4 hours play was possible on day one before heavy rains forced the last two sessions to be abandoned. After the victory, captain Misbah-ul-Haq had said that Pakistan deserved to be number one, owing to the absence of cricket back home in the country.
Umpires Nigel Llong and Rod Tucker determined that the fix work being undertaken on a saturated outfield eliminated any chance of play despite nearly continuous sunshine over the previous two days.
The Test match season was at its peak as it was Pakistan vs England, India vs West Indies, Australia vs Sri Lanka, and New Zealand vs Zimbabwe.
