Notre Dame’s Kelly kicks Redfield off team, suspends Butler

Indiana State Police found marijuana and a loaded handgun in a auto packed with Notre Dame football players Friday night.
Butler, who was held at the county jail, was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
Butler was arrested early Saturday outside the Linebacker Lounge on early charges of resisting a police officer and battery against a police officer, according to the Observer. Redfield and two other players in the vehicle also face a misdemeanor charge for possession of an unlicensed handgun. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of an unlicensed handgun.
“But even within that system, there are times when a player’s conduct so clearly fails to meet the standards I have set for our football team that it is appropriate to take action independent of any decision that might be made by the Office of Community Standards. Their conduct fell far short of what we expect from those who represent our football and this great university”. Butler was agitated, according to the report, and when officers told him to back away he allegedly pushed the officers and punched one of them.
After a brief scuffle, police were able to subdue Butler – using a Taser – and handcuff him, Galea said.
Redfield was involved in a traffic stop with wide receiver Kevin Stepherson Jr., running back Dexter Williams, cornerback Ashton White and linebacker Te’Von Coney.
“The expectations we set for the members of our team are high”, Kelly said. During a search of the auto, officer found marijuana and a loaded handgun. To be fair, teams that are just inside the top 10 like the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal, the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers, and No. 10 Notre Dame have had the perception of being top 10 caliber entering the season, whereas No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 12 Michigan State, and No. 13 TCU felt just outside of that threshold.
“On the basis of my review, I have chose to dismiss Max Redfield from our football team and place Devin Butler on indefinite suspension”.
Asked whether the school was considering any disciplinary action against the six student-athletes, Paul Browne, vice president for public affairs and communications at Notre Dame, outlined the university’s general policy.
Notre Dame on Friday had completed the grueling training camp portion of preseason practice, with Kelly giving the players the weekend off before resuming workouts on Monday. We’ve seen this several times during the Brian Kelly era, with names like Tommy Rees, Michael Floyd and Carlo Calabrese, among others, making the police blotter in recent years. Notre Dame defeated USC 41-31.
Notre Dame’s first game of the season will be played on Sunday, September 4th, at Texas.
Redfield was a starter at safety the last two seasons and was the Irish’s fourth-leading tackler in 2015 with 64 total tackles, and he had one interception.
