Colts add Antonio Cromartie to secondary with 1-year deal
The Colts couldn’t quite win the AFC South title past year thanks to some injuries and a defense that struggled to defend the pass.
The Colts signed cornerback Antonio Cromartie after the former Jets star worked out in front of coaches on Monday, the team announced.
The Colts have reportedly looked into the veteran services of a few names, including Cromartie.
The information was further confirmed when Antonio Cromartie posted a Tweet of his own. Cornerback Patrick Robinson suffered a groin injury Saturday and it appears as though Vontae Davis will miss the start of the season because of an ankle injury. The 10-year veteran was excited to hear the news. Last year’s third-round draft pick, D’Joun Smith, is still being eased back in after encountering a setback in his return from a knee injury that ruined his rookie season. The Colts are further hampered in the secondary by three injuries to other key players.
The Colts play at the Jets on December 5 (a Monday night), though it’s not clear if Cromartie still will be with Indianapolis at that point in the season.
To fill the Colts’ pressing need at cornerback, they’ve turned to a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback.
Despite mounting injuries, the Indianapolis Colts received some positive news on medical matters. Cromartie has been dealing with a hip problem, but was able to impress the Colts enough in his workout for them despite it. As the lone Pro Bowl-caliber player on coach Chuck Pagano’s defensive roster, Davis’ loss can not be overemphasized.
