Instead of tipping their Latina server, couple left a hateful message
Sadie Elledge was working at Jess’ Lunch last Monday when she says she started serving a man and a woman seated at the counter. The couple nodded rather than speak to her while they were in the restaurant, Elledge, 18, told WHSV. Instead, the customers included a short note explaining their decision: “We only tip citizens”.
Ironically, Ms Elledge was born in the USA and is an American citizen, though she has mixed Mexican and Honduran heritage. “Sadie’s the third oldest”.
‘It shouldn’t even matter, I just feel like it’s rude and disrespectful, ‘ she said. We’re a totally bicultural family.
‘We didn’t talk much, ‘ Elledge told The Washington Post.
“I would like for them to not come here unless they regret what they did”, Floros says. One granddaughter works as a secretary in the firm, and Jess’ Lunch, the restaurant where Sadie works, is a few steps away.
Despite the unwelcome surprise, Ms Elledge says she would “be the better person” and serve the couple again. “She told me and I flew off the handle”. They were angry that this was making the rounds on social media.
Elledge’s boss, Angeliki Floros, told the station that she would like an apology from the couple, whom she called cowardly.
Residents in Harrisburg who heard about the incident chose to chip in and cover the tip, plus a bit extra, WHSV adds.
“Ironically, [she] is friends with Sadie’s mother, Elsa Elledge, and cousin, Olivia Morales”, he posted online. The female in the couple “was mad that I posted it….” “I said obviously, it was an insult – your signature against my granddaughter – darn right I’m going to post it”.
