Local Volunteers Help Louisiana Flood Victims
The shelter at the River Center is state-run by the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services with help from the Red Cross. Workers said they do not have the manpower to process and sort through items such as food, clothing and medicines. They all vary, for example, the Eden Church Road shelter needs unopened Depends for adults, new underwear for all ages and sizes, socks and nighttime volunteers, all of which the shelter will accept. If they need clothes, they can get them through partner organizations.
“I also appreciated the good phone call, the conversation that I had with Gov. [Mike] Pence [R-Ind.], who was honest and genuine when he called, and we spoke for a long time on Friday morning about their desire to be helpful”, he said about Trump’s running mate. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers to perform its mission and is now seeking volunteers for all lines of service and leadership positions.
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides global humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.
The state government now says that more than 60,000 homes are reported damaged. The pup was rescued two days after a state of emergency was declared across the whole state of Louisiana on August 12th.
For a while, families able to seek shelter there say it was everything they could have hoped for. “If you are a victim, it’s still an ongoing disaster”.
The Red Cross and its partners have served almost 100,000 meals and snacks since the onset of the flooding. “Not red cross volunteers, just people that are affected and they come up and say how can I help, and geez I would like to even become a volunteer in this situation even though I’m living in a shelter”.
