Sharp palate: Surgeons save man with taste for metal knives

Doctors remove 40 knives from the stomach of a man who developed a habit of swallowing blades after an accident in northern India.

The 42-year-old received emergency treatment at a hospital in Gurdaspur, a city in the North India state of Punjab, after complaining of abdomen pain and weakness.

He said: ‘When we began diagnosis, we found the cause of the pain puzzling.

As to why he consumed those knives, the patient told CNN, “I don’t know why I used to swallow knives.I just enjoyed its taste and I was addicted”.

“The patient said that he had swallowed 28 knives but we removed 40”.

A CT scan confirmed the metallic mass as “pocket knives” each measuring about seven inches.

The doctor said when they placed the camera inside Singh, they found metallic materials present in his stomach. Some of the knives were rusted and broken.
