Speedo and Ralph Lauren Drop Ryan Lochte Sponsorship After Rio Olympics Scandal
But this time he’s claiming to tell the truth.
We’re talking about the four USA swimmers who claimed they were robbed but then we found out from Rio police that the story was not entirely true.
U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun announced today that further action is coming in the case of star swimmer Ryan Lochte and his three teammates whose story of a robbery at gunpoint grabbed headlines around the world. Swimmer Gunnar Benz said the security guards accosted them after they had urinated behind some bushes and Lochte had ripped an advertising poster from a wall. “He took our money, he took my wallet”.
The athletes, who appeared intoxicated, stopped in a taxi at the gas station to use the bathroom during the early hours of the morning. It was later confirmed that the security guard had drawn his gun after the men refused to pay for damages.
While there have been conflicting versions over whether the guards pulled their weapons on the swimmers, Lochte conceded that his behaviour led to the confrontation, which resulted in the swimmers paying some £38 in United States and Brazilian currency before they were allowed to leave.
The four-time Olympian and gold medalist took full responsibility for embellishing the incident in Rio that brought worldwide outrage. “I was intoxicated, so I don’t know”.
If the USOC says I cant swim anymore, I think that would be the most hurtful, just because I put so much time and effort into this sport.
“We just wanted to get out of there”, Ryan told Matt. “We were all frightened, and we wanted to get out of there as quick as possible”, Lochte stated. “We don’t know. All we know is there was a gun pointed in our direction and we were demanded to give money”. The incident caused a furore in Rio, where street crime was a major issue heading into the Games.
He went on to write that he “should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself”, and mentioned that he would have released the apology sooner, but was waiting until three of his teammates, also involved in the incident, had been allowed to return to the U.S.by Brazilian authorities. “None of this would have happened, and it was my immature behavior…”
