Romo, Prescott lead Dallas win; Dolphins move with Tannehill
Prescott has two touchdowns passes in each of the two preseason games and is 22 of 27 for 338 yards without an interception after completing his first eight passes following a 10-of-12 showing in his National Football League debut against the Los Angeles Rams last week.
Romo, who hadn’t played in a game since breaking his collarbone on Thanksgiving of a year ago, started and completed 5 of 6 passes for 49 yards. He relieved Tony Romo after two series and when it was over, the rookie was 12 of 15 for 199 yards with two more touchdown passes along with two rushing touchdowns.
Prescott hit Dez Bryant for a 28-yard score in the second quarter. Typically, teams use the third game as a dress rehearsal for the regular season and starters play into the second half.
Romo was 4 of 5 for 49 yards, and the Dallas offense had 300 yards at halftime.
“On Saturday night, he had a good start, fortified by the poise he’s demonstrated on the practice field”.
“We’re seeing some of the things that, frankly, he was able to do in the SEC”, Jerry Jones said. “It’s been a long offseason”.
“We are in a situation where we can have a developing quarterback because of the excellence of Tony Romo”, Jones said. Judging from what we’re reading in all the game reports, he impressed a lot of people, including the team owner. Grant was a sixth-round draft pick for the Dolphins, who are looking for as much offensive help as they can get after ranking 26th in total offense a year ago. Tannehill also led a third drive to inside the Dallas five but that ended on downs. Coach Jason Garrett hasn’t been willing to say Prescott’s in position to hold that spot on the depth chart and Jones said that the team doesn’t want to “get ahead of ourselves”, but his further comments suggested that Prescott’s name may already be written on the depth chart in ink.
That’s what makes Prescott’s first two preseason games so exciting for the Cowboys. He even showed off his legs on a 20 yard touchdown run.
Prescott threw a 58 yard pass to Brice Butler to the Dolphins’ 1.
“There’s a constant evolution about putting new plays in, constant thinking and challenging yourself but yet staying within the system”, Romo said. “I’m going to continue to push myself and make myself the best as I can each and every day”.
But the Cowboys’ offense kept churning out yards and points in the second half. The Cowboys had two touchdowns nullified by penalties and the Dolphins had an interception wiped out by a penalty. Twice, Miami (1-1) failed to convert on fourth-down tries inside the Dallas 10-yard line. It will also be interesting to see how Miami deals with the losses of defensive end Olivier Vernon and running back Lamar Miller, and we should get a preview of the next chapter of Dolphin football this Friday night.
That drive was stifled because of drops in the end zone from tight end Jordan Cameron and receiver Jarvis Landry.
