Ohioans diagnosed with West Nile virus
A mosquito-borne disease advisory was issued Tuesday for Hillsborough County due to an increase in West Nile virus detected in sentinel chicken flocks, according to the Florida Department of Health. The researchers found hundreds of dead birds from 33 counties in California to be positive for the virus. The only other human case in Colorado so far this year was reported in a man in Mesa County.
The city of Denton says a mosquito trapped at the University of North Texas athletics facility near Highland Park Road has tested positive for West Nile virus.
West Nile, which is carried by a specific type of mosquito, routinely shows up in people in the summer, though the number of confirmed cases varies widely.
Milder symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. These illnesses affect birds, animals and humans, causing flu-like symptoms in people who are bitten by infected mosquitoes.
