Robbie Benson’s brilliant goal for Dundalk against Legia Warsaw
Dundalk now go into the draw for the Europa League group stages on Friday.
Assistant manager Vinny Perth was a guest on Now That’s What I Call Sport last weekend, he gave Jamie Moore some insight into their preparations for this game. We received it and passed it well, particularly in the first half.
“But we just couldn’t create enough in that final 20 minutes that we needed to, to get that second goal”.
This gave the Louth side 20 minutes to push for the second that would have brought the game to extra time but ultimately it never came and the sucker punch did when Legia’s Kucharczyk scored in the 90th to end the tie.
“The fact that we’re 2-0 down I think we’re quite unfortunate in that regard”.
They missed-out on becoming the first League of Ireland side to reach the group stages of the Champions League. Now he will experience it at first hand!
“Legia have home advantage, their passionate fans, great stadium with great support, but we look forward to playing in that environment”. I can not pick a team I would like to face in the group stage, nor any favourite player – there are so many great guys in this competition. “I’d certainly be looking at this Dundalk side and thinking they could pick up a couple of points and bring it on even further”. They’ve been nothing short of magnificent in this Champions League run.
“It’s clearly defined”, said Stephen Kenny in advance of the game.
