Kenya disbands Olympic committee after troubles in Rio
It was set a September 30 deadline to report back to the minister with recommendation for action.
“Enough is enough!”, said Wario.
“I do hereby disband the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) with immediate effect”, Hassan Wario said at a press conference in Nairobi.
Wario however has since absolved himself of any blame saying he is equally a victim of the Rio debacle which he blamed on a cartel. “Its officials are in charge of equipment, transport, accommodation and have the sole exclusive authority over everything including the colour of uniform”, Wario explained.
Several issues reportedly arose in the management of athletes in Olympic Games that saw the athletics team manager, Michael Rotich, recalled over doping bribery allegations.
The Kenyan team’s challenges have made the headlines starting with a mishap involving the world javelin champion Julius Yego who almost missed his flight to Rio following a ticket issue. That odd incident came shortly track and field manager Michael Rotich (no relation to Ferguson) offered to warn athletes if they were going to be tested for doping, for the fine sum of around $13,000 each. “I made the decision to deport him because he was shaming our country”, the CS confirmed.
“These allegations on the National Olympic Committee pose an enormous threat that will adversely affect the stability and reputation of the Olympic Games in this country”, Wario said. “They should be, and will be a thing of the past very shortly”.
The MP said he called Kenya’s sports minister but he didn’t pick up. Others are former Nairobi branch volleyball chairman Moses Mbuthia and ex-athletes Moses Kiptanui, Elizabeth Olaba and Rose Tata Muya. This performance was however dampened by bungled organisation that so infuriated the general public. Eliud Kipchoge the marathon victor was forced to get his own ticket back home.
There were also reports some of Kenya’s team official sports wear at the Games, which was distributed by Nike, had been sold by officials.
According to the BBC, the Kenyan Olympic committee was disbanded by the government on Thursday.
