Poll shows that most Israelis, Palestinians still seek peace
“Unfortunately, the process is stagnant, and there needs to be efforts as long as there is an initiative from the Israelis, Palestinians, other countries in the region, and the worldwide community”. Israel says the weapons’ crackdown is making it harder for Palestinian assailants to acquire guns.
“At the same time, it is important to end the Palestinian-Palestinian rift. and to have national reconciliation between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas so that the climate be ready for real efforts to establish a state”, he said.
Regarding the possibility of amending the API, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a press conference in May, “We are willing to negotiate with the Arab states’ revisions to that initiative so that it reflects the dramatic changes in the region since 2002”.
It was conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute, where Hermann is a senior fellow, and Shikaki’s Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research.
The survey interviewed 1,270 Palestinians and 1,184 Israelis in June, and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points. Some 207 Palestinians have been killed in that time, majority identified as attackers by Israel.
The crackdown comes amid an 11-month wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence which has largely tapered off in recent weeks. Secular and left-wing Israeli Jews are more likely to be supportive, while more-religious and right-wing Israeli Jews are less likely to be. A plurality of Palestinians, 44 percent, prefer multilateral negotiations, while a plurality of Israeli Jews, 40 percent, prefer bilateral ones between the Israeli government and the Palestinians. The city is holy to both Jews and Muslims. All the other options – the United States, the European Union and the United Nations – are acceptable to one side but unacceptable to the other.
Sisi, who is seen as having good ties with both Israel and Mr. Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, has also been pushing for a resumption of negotiations. “And we’ve said repeatedly such moves are not consistent with Israel’s stated desire to achieve a two-state solution”, deputy State Department spokesman Marc Toner said Tuesday during a daily briefing with reporters in response to a question.
Israel is alleging that the land, where the new construction is planned to take place, “was inhabited by Jewish families prior to the establishment of Israel”.
