Clark County confirms first case of Zika virus
“Pregnant women should avoid travel to Zika-affected areas and anyone who travels to areas where the Zika virus is spreading should take precautions to prevent infection”.
“We’re in the midst of mosquito season and expect more Zika infections in the days and months to come”, said CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden.
“One case does not mean active transmission is taking place and that’s why the department conducts a thorough investigation by sampling close contacts and community members around each case to determine if additional people are infected”, the agency wrote.
Meanwhile, Florida’s Department of Agriculture has screened 25,000 mosquitoes for Zika.
“Miami Beach does have a series of characteristics that make it particularly challenging”, Frieden said.
“We don’t know the exact link, one could be a tourist, one could be someone who may have worked on Miami Beach”, Levine told reporters.
A handful of Zika cases have been identified and health officials are deciding which area or areas to include in any updated travel guidance, the source said. To assist in this effort, I have also directed DOH to work with DBPR to provide educational materials and offer mosquito spraying at no cost to these businesses in Miami-Dade County.
Scott described the new area of infection in the narrow island city as just under 1.5 miles between 8th and 28th streets.
The prospect of closing Miami Beach has been a major concern for officials, as the area is heavily dependent on tourism that draws in $24 billion annually.
“It’s probably not a huge story, given that on any particular day there may be many people from Zika-endemic areas of Central America coming into El Paso”, said Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine.
Presently, the Zika virus has experienced a new trend – the spread of the virus from one state to another.
The current Zika outbreak was detected a year ago in Brazil, where it has been linked to more than 1,700 cases of microcephaly.
Researchers say that Zika can also cause a birth defect known as microcephaly. The virus is also associated with other complications in babies.
Studies had previously confirmed that Zika virus was sexually transmitted from men to women.
The virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito.
