Tony Romo out with another back injury, no word on return
Although Garrett, in announcing the injury on Saturday, did not rule Romo out of playing in the Cowboys’ season opener on September 11 against the New York Giants, it appears likely that rookie Dak Prescott will start in Romo’s place.
According to ESPN, during a conference call Saturday, head coach Jason Garrett declined to rule out Tony Romo for the 2016 home-opener in Dallas, against the New York Giants.
At halftime, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said, “His back was bothering him a little bit after that play”.
Tony Romo reportedly left the Cowboys’ preseason game against the Seahawks Thursday with a back injury, prompting the “typical injury-prone Romo” reaction from some fans.
Romo exited after just three plays following an awkward hit from Cliff Avril from behind at the end of a scramble. He played in only four games past year, and his last 16-game season came in 2012. This could aid in possibly seeing Romo return in Week 8 when the Cowboys take on the arch nemesis Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football on October 30th. Romo immediately went down in pain, holding his back, and had to be helped off of the field by trainers.
The team would not give a timetable on Romo’s return, but a source said he could be out 6-10 weeks. He missed 12 games in 2015 after twice fracturing his collarbone.
It would seem now that rookie Dak Prescott will become the Cowboys’ starting quarterback.

The fourth-round rookie has exceeded the most optimistic of expectations this preseason, completing 39 of 50 passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns, with two rushing touchdowns and no fumbles or interceptions.
