Police in Bangladesh killed three suspected militants Saturday, including a man they identified as a Canadian accused of masterminding a deadly attack on a cafe in Dhaka last month. Four people died in that attack, including two police officers.
At least three alleged militants, including Tamim Chowdhury, a suspected mastermind of Gulshan attack, were killed on Saturday morning during a special drive of the joint forces in a militant den in Paikpara area of Narayanganj.
Diplomatic sources said Bangladesh, India and the U.S. are constantly exchanging intelligence about terrorism related activities and this cooperation is credited with halting potential attacks.
“We think Tamim Chowdhury’s chapter has ended here”, Khan said.
“Canadian officials are in contact with Bangladeshi authorities to gather additional information”, the statement said. “No further details can be provided at this time”. After the operation, police entered the house and found three bodies, the police said. “Among those three was a person whose face looked similar to a photo of Tamin Chowdhury and I can now confirm Chowdhury was among the dead”.
“We’ve given them an opportunity to surrender”, he added.
Security officials were tipped off that Chowdhury was hiding in Narayanganj, Bangladesh police chief Shahidul Hoque said.
Global Affairs Canada said officials are in contact with their Bangladeshi counterparts about the matter, but the assistance they can offer is limited as Mr Khan is not a citizen.
However, the government in Bangladesh has rejected the group’s claim of responsibility, saying worldwide Islamic extremist networks do not have a foothold in the Muslim-majority country.
