Women bare breasts for equality in New York City
The day seems like a step in the right direction for those who want to reclaim nudity.
Obviously our prurience outweighs our principles on this particular issue … but the question still stands: Should government impose anti-topless laws against women that are not imposed against men? It’s liberating, it’s radical, it’s the bra-burning feminism that challenges the way we think about bodies.
“We’re working toward freeing women’s nipples and obtaining equal gender topless rights that are enforced worldwide”, said Beatrice Charles of the local branch of GoTopless, the sponsor of the event.
Women around the country are taking off their tops on GoTopless Day, a day that promotes gender equality and women’s rights to bare their breasts in public.
Unfortunately, but perhaps not surprisingly, plenty of men are expressing their enthusiasm on Twitter.
In April 2015, the Venice Neighborhood Council voted 12-2 in favor of a resolution stating that the council “supports women being afforded the same rights as men to sunbathe topless”. Organizers say they chose this weekend in order to honor the 95th anniversary of Women’s Equality Day (Friday) and support the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. A giant balloon in the shape of a pair of breasts will float in the NYC’s sky.
“Yes, and I like it because one day I’m gonna be famous and they’re going to look back and those measly photos they took of me they’re gonna sell for millions”, McInerny said. Gatherings were planned in New Hampshire, Denver and more. It may be sensual, but it’s not illegal to be sensual.
It’s been legal to be bare-breasted in NY since 1992.
Kia Sinclair is an event organizer for GoTopless Day at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. The legality of women going topless varies by state.
“It’s in hopes to show people that it can be normal, that it’s really not a big deal and it’s not about getting attention or protesting”, she said.
