West Nile Virus Confirmed in Mosquito Collected in Barnstable
The Bucks County West Nile Virus Prevention Program will conduct an ultra-low volume (ULV) mosquito control operation to reduce high populations of mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus Wednesday, August 31, 2016 in Bristol Township and Middletown Township.
That brings the total to 110 samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans mosquitoes, as well as 14 birds that have tested positive for West Nile. Infected mosquitoes can transmit the virus from birds and then carry it to horses or people.
Zika virus has not been found in any mosquitoes on Long Island, Nassau and Suffolk officials said.
Health Department traps have indicated a significant presence of Asia tiger mosquitoes in the neighborhoods that will be sprayed.
Residents are also asked to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, be sure to dump out any standing water in yards.
Spray trucks are scheduled to be out spraying pesticide in the city for the seventh time this summer to fight the spread of the Zika and West Nile viruses.
Also previous year, 2,060 human cases of West Nile were reported in the United States, resulting in 119 deaths, based on information as of mid-January, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The West Nile Fever cases reported here are unrelated to the Equine Herpes Virus-1 case confirmed by WADDL last week in a hospitalized horse at WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
