Giants hit 4 homers to back Bumgarner and beat Braves 13-4
That’s no easy task for a team that’s been off track since July, but any fan of the San Francisco Giants knows that all three of their World Series wins in the last six years can be defined by one word: torture.
Panik’s mini-power surge highlighted the Giants’ lineup breaking out for 18 hits in a 13-4 win over the Atlanta Braves at AT&T Park. Blair went 2-4 with a 5.98 ERA and.313 opponents’ batting average in nine starts for Gwinnett, but struck out 45 against 24 walks and three homers in 49 2/3 innings.Bumgarner has struggled since the All-Star break, going 2-4 with a 3.71 ERA and allowing nine runs on 15 hits with four walks in 10 innings across his past two starts. “It’s good to kind of quiet the crowd a little bit because they get riled up when they’re up, if you can get on the board and get them down, they’ll back off you a little bit”.
You want to give those guys the same effort that they give you out in the field, Samardzija said.
“I’m feeling much better, the treatment’s already working pretty good”, Pence said.
“It’s great to take a series here – it’s great to take any series”, Bochy said.
Why so significant? Well, they hadn’t won a series at home since the All-Star break.
San Francisco is a considerable -310 favorite at home and the Over/Under (O/U) for this matchup is set at seven runs.
Giants: 1B Brandon Belt was a late scratch with neck tightness. No Giants team had ever previously had four triples and four home runs in the same game. It was also the first in the majors since the New York Yankees did it May 6, 1998, against the Texas Rangers.
Is there any value to backing the Giants in this game? “My command was good, just not the first pitch of the at-bat it seemed like”. “I thought he kept everything together really well”. It didn’t matter necessarily who got the hits.
In support of Moore’s dominant outing, the Giants offense came alive as well with eight hits, including a two-out RBI from Denard Span and a two-run shot from Joe Panik that saved San Francisco from the nightmare of being swept by a bitter rival. Kemp brought everybody home with his blast to center field, his 26th homer of the year. The homer, which put Atlanta up 3-1, was the eighth of Kemp’s career at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Giants sent 14 men to the plate in the rally.
“Just made them hit it to (shortstop Brandon) Crawford mostly”, Samardzija said, referring to his Gold Glove teammate. “You saw glimpses of the stuff, but it’s got to be consistent”.
Then the game turned in the fourth. With Aaron Blair set to oppose Madison Bumgarner in the pitching matchup, the over/under now sits at 7.5 runs. Blair also has as many walks, 29, as strikeouts.
Panik hit a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run drive in the fourth to almost the same spot in the right-field arcade seats.
In the sixth inning, with the Braves now leading 3-1, Span singled without and moved to second on a wild pitch. This season, Bumgarner has given up 21 homers, matching his total from each of the previous two seasons. They also didn’t gain any ground in the N.L. West over a seemingly opportunistic weekend when they played the last-place Braves and the Dodgers were taking on the redoubtable Chicago Cubs. We were hitting the gaps. All of the damage came on a three-run bomb by Matt Kemp in the fourth inning. He went 4.1 innings, giving up eight runs, striking out two and walking three. Asked if he would admit to that if it were true, Bumgarner said: “I wouldn’t, but I’m not”. Peavy was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain during the afternoon, but the club clearly had made this decision earlier, since Suarez was notified he was coming to San Francisco on Friday.
