Browns cut 10 players, including starting LB Paul Kruger

Kruger signed a five-year, $40 million deal in 2013, when the Browns snagged him from the Ravens. If Kruger had suffered a serious injury, the Browns would have owed his full $6.5 million base salary for 2016. Nate Orchard is listed as a starter at one outside linebacker position, and rookie Emmanuel Ogbah is listed as Kruger’s backup on the depth chart.
Later that spring the Browns selected Barkevious Mingo in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, planning to pair him with Kruger as outside linebackers to terrorize opposing quarterbacks. After having a career-best 11 sacks in 2014, he had only 2.5 sacks in 2015, often motoring toward the right tackle to no avail. Still, he was the only proven National Football League pass rusher left on the Browns’ roster. The Browns are coming off a 30-13 loss Friday at Tampa Bay in a game that saw shortcomings emerge in all three phases.
Haden struggled past year, although that was in large part because of injuries. Haden did say he wasn’t quite in game-shape yet.
In theory, the Browns could still bring him back at a reduced rate, if/when he realizes that other teams won’t be offering anything close to what the Browns would be willing to pay – or after someone still on the roster gets injured.
The team also waived DB Sean Baker, TE E.J. Bibbs, WR Josh Boyce, K Travis Coons, WR Ed Eagan, FB Robert Hughes, TE David Reeves and OL Cory Tucker.
Davis was signed by the Browns last September and had his contract extended through 2017.
Davis was a quarterback, Hayden a defensive lineman and Kruger a linebacker. All NFL teams must trim their rosters from a maximum of 90 players to 75 prior to 4 p.m. Tuesday and from 75 to 53 before 4 p.m. Saturday. He became expendable when the Browns drafted Cody Kessler in the third round. Hayden started for the Cowboys past year, but struggled.
