Mets 2B Cabrera leaves with sore left knee
He is 2-for-5 with a double against Philadelphia’s scheduled Sunday starter Vince Velasquez while Yoenis Cespedes has a homer in five at-bats.
Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left Sunday’s game against the Phillies in the first inning with what the team described as a sore left knee.
Mets manager Terry Collins indicated that his three injured players might require daily checkups for the remainder of the season.
Cabrera aggravated his knee when he collided with first baseman Tommy Joseph while beating out a bunt single. The Phillies gave up the “cycle” of homers – a solo shot, a two-run blast, a three-run homer and a grand slam – on Saturday for the first time since May 17, 1979.
Pinch-hitter Peter Bourjos was hit by a pitch from Robles with the bases loaded, forcing in another run. The 24-year-old right-hander had struggled of late, allowing 19 runs and 25 hits over his previous 16 1/3 innings. As Joseph reached for Velazquez’s high throw, Cabrera’s left arm made contact with Joseph’s left hip. Cabrera appeared to twist awkwardly after the collision.
On the next play, Cabrera was advancing to second base on a single into the outfield from utility man Kelly Johnson when he came up limping off the base. Flores started the top of the second inning at third base, while Jose Reyes moved to shortstop.
Cabrera missed 17 games with a strained patella tendon in his left knee, returning from the disabled list with Cespedes on August 19.
Phillies: Bourjos was hit by a 97 miles per hour fastball on the left wrist.
After a surprising trip to the World Series in 2015, the Mets now sit outside of the playoffs in the National League, trailing the St. Louis Cardinals by 2.5 games for the second wild card spot. Montero will be recalled from Double-A Binghamton on Monday and last pitched in the majors on April 19. Gsellman, 23, was 1-5 with a 5.73 ERA in nine starts with Triple-A Las Vegas.
