Get Uber Ride Discounts By Shopping With Visa Cards
The latest deal is with Visa, which is letting riders earn points they can use towards their Uber rides. The company said its cardholders who use Uber in the United States spend more than $144 billion per year at brick and mortar merchants, with $2 billion spent at local businesses soon after getting out of an Uber.
The offer is reportedly set to be first offered in San Francisco and Los Angeles, with plans for expansion to other cities.
Uber is rolling out a new way for users to get free rides through the app.
If you use Uber a lot and have a Visa card, you’re in a luck – the pair have unveiled “Local Offers”, created to get you to spend more at brick-and-mortar stores in return for Uber credit. Uber and Visa hope to expand this volume through Uber Local Offers, a program that rewards Uber riders with one point for every dollar spent at enrolled merchants. Visa cardholders who use Uber in the USA spend over $144 billion per year in physical stores with $2 billion spent at local businesses soon after exiting an Uber.
The Uber Local Offers program is part of a broader initiative by Visa to offer targeted discounts that help draw customers to its merchants.
“Essentially, what it does is it allows the ability to cross-promote across merchants, to allow merchants to deliver their own kinds of offers, and to do it in as frictionless a way as possible”, Vasant Prabhu, Visa’s finance chief, said at a Goldman Sachs technology and internet conference in February. Qualifying purchases are recognized at the point of sale and rewards can be seamlessly applied to cardholder accounts – eliminating the need for coupons or redemption schemes.
This type of promotion really depends on the partnerships Uber and Visa can pull.
