The Best And Worst Of WWE Raw 8/29/16: Game Of Owens
Onscreen WWE COO Triple H returned at the “WWE RAW” main event initially to help Seth Rollins eliminate Roman Reigns in the Fatal Four-Way elimination match for the WWE Universal Championship, but shocked the world when he turned on Rollins moments later to help Kevin Owens win the championship. When the initial Mount Rushmore of Professional Wrestling stable formed in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Owens (then Steen) was the only member of the group without a title.
We have a new WWE universal champion. The finish of the match saw Owens get a double-assist from Triple H, as “The Game” laid out both Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, helping Owens score the 1-2-3 to win the vacant title in Houston, Texas. Owens shook Triple H’s hand, and it seemed as if the two confirmed an alliance of sorts.
Raw general manager Mick Foley was seen visibly upset at Triple H for intervening while his wife, commissioner Stephanie McMahon, looked on in shock that her husband would betray Rollins. Randy Orton also got used in a similar way after he defected from The Authority by the end of that same year.
He served him up on a plate for a clearly delighted Rollins who, having been beaten to the title at SummerSlam by Balor, felt he would be the beneficiary of the four mentored by the five-time champion.
Owens became just the second man to hold the belt after Finn Balor. However, that reign would not last long as Finn Balor was injured in that match and ended up relinquishing the title. So then it was down to Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins. What is interesting to see is where WWE goes from here.
