Endwell, New York, wins Little League World Series
Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the South Korea team in the championship game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It’s also the first championship for a NY team since Staten Island won in 1964.
Although he gave up a two-run homer that halved his team’s lead late in the USA final, righty Jude Abbadessa will likely get the call for NY. Harlost raced home on a passed ball to give NY a 2-0 lead one batter later.
The final score Sunday night: Mid-Atlantic 2, South Korea 1.
Connor Rush hit a blooper to knock Abbadessa home, then Harlost ran home from 3rd on a passed ball to make it 2-0.
James Fellows came through for NY with just his fifth hit of the tournament on Saturday but he leads the team with an on base percentage of.700 and is hitting a team-best.625 with 10 plate appearances.
“From there on, I pretty much knew we were going to go a long way”, infielder Jack Hopko told the Associated Press.
“It’s just been awesome”, Abbadessa said.
“I was a little nervous at first in front of a lot of people”, Harlost said.
James Fellows turned in the defensive play of the day, denying Sangheon Park a home run in the second inning. Shortstop Jungtaek Ru gave chase, but his over-the-shoulder effort came up short as Abbadessa scored the game’s first run as Harlost advanced to third.
Endwell, N.Y.’s Conner Rush drives in a run with a single off South Korea’s Junho Jeong during the fourth inning of the Little League World Series Championship baseball game in South Williamsport, Pa., Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016.
Maine-Endwell beat Tennessee on Monday, 3-1, and then won their game against Kentucky on Wednesday 13-10. “I also tip my hat to the coaching staff for their leadership and passion throughout the team’s flawless season”. Abbadessa broke up the righty’s no-hit bid with a single to center. Several of the players from that team gathered to watch the 2016 championship game together.
“They’re a big team”, Rush said. “So it’s just awesome to know that we all came together to be the best team in the world”.
