Nationals fall to Orioles 4-3, ruining Cole’s debut
Now, they will travel to Nationals Park, a stadium Orioles fans are sure to fill, with a chance to win the MASN Cup. Bryce Harper added a two-RBI double to opposite field in the eighth inning to give the Nats some extra insurance.
Doubles by Manny Machado and Chris Davis produced a run and Trumbo followed with a drive that soared far beyond the left-field wall.
Left-hander Wade Miley (7-10, 5.58) is still looking for his first win with the Orioles since being acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline.
Harper became Katie Ledecky’s medal holder while the swimmer threw out the ceremonial first pitch. 5-1, Orioles. With two down, Trumbo was hit by a pitch.
Los Angeles’ Adrian Gonzalez hit three of the Dodgers’ seven homers – driving in a career-high eight runs – and rookie Corey Seager also went long in an 18-9 win against Cincinnati. Orioles manager Buck Showalter won all three of his challenges with two of them resulting in Turner being called out at second on stolen base attempts.
Chicago’s Jon Lester was in command as he steered the Cubs to a 5-1 victory at San Diego.
Danny Espinosa had a home run as well, snapping a 38-game stretch without one.
The Nationals jumped on top in the first inning when Murphy singled for his 90th RBI. Out of the six outs he did get, five came via the strikeout and he didn’t walk a batter so there was some positives to take out of the game. It partly made up for his disappointing pitching performance as he let a 5-2 lead slip and gave up six walks. Despite Trea Turner going 4-for-4, the Nats offense couldn’t get much going against Kevin Gausman as the O’s won the second game of the series, 8-1. Daniel Murphy and Wilson Ramos are both second and third in batting average in the National League respectively. Runners on the corners with one down.
Zach Britton worked a ideal ninth to earn his 38th save in 38 tries.
Britton got Ryan Zimmerman to ground into a game-ending double play, making Washington starter Tanner Roark (13-7) lament his rough start. That leads the majors and matches the Nationals club record for a single season.
The Nationals wrap up their annual 4-game Beltway rivalry with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday afternoon, Washington Nationals Manager Dusty Baker was asked whether possessing an eight-game cushion in the National League East in late August altered how the Nationals were navigating the schedule and resting players.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Baltimore closer Zach Britton saw his remarkable streak of 43 straight games without allowing an earned run end, then shut down a ninth-inning rally to help the Orioles hold off the Washington Nationals 10-8 Wednesday night.
The 28-year-old Strasburg (15-4, 3.59 ERA) was willing to pitch through the pain, but with a comfortable lead in the National League East, the Nationals decided it was best to let him rest and recover before finishing out the regular season.
