Cardinals get reliever Jonathan Broxton from Brewers
Broxton has a 5.89 ERA in 36 2/3 innings as a set-up man for Milwaukee this season, but he has been pitching better of late with seven consecutive scoreless appearances.
Not satisfied with Marlins right-hander Steve Cishek as their only bullpen reinforcement, the Cardinals have acquired right-hander Jonathan Broxton from the Brewers in exchange for minor leaguer Mailk Collymore. The Cardinals traded for former closer Jordan Walden last November, though Walden has missed most of this season with a shoulder injury, and his rehab assignment has included a couple hiccups.
The Cardinals sent rookie-level outfielder Malik Collymore to Milwaukee for Broxton, who has served in a setup role for the Brewers this season. Broxton adds another arm to the bullpen.
The St. Louis Cardinals certainly buy into the old baseball adage that you can never have too much pitching. They’ve now traded Broxton, Carlos Gomez, Mike Fiers and Gerardo Parra, and could still move guys like Adam Lind, Kyle Lohse, Matt Garza and Francisco Rodriguez before the trade deadline. His contract includes a $9 million club option for 2016 that will likely be bought out for $2 million.
Perhaps his track record was enough to convince St. Louis that he was a reasonable pickup.
