Greenville police investigate another clown sighting
According to the report, a woman told police that her son saw “clowns in the woods whispering and making unusual noises” at about 8:30 p.m. He also cited a Greenville ordinance that prohibits “molesting, disturbing or following persons”.
“It’s illegal. It’s risky”. “It’s illegal. It’s risky”.
Another woman reported seeing a “large-figured clown with a blinking nose, standing under a post light near the garbage dumpster area” near another apartment complex, Emerald Commons, at 2:30 a.m., ABC reported. Not all reports have been verified by local law enforcement.
Addressing the incidents at a media conference Thursday, Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller said officers will arrest and charge anyone dressed up as a clown.
Multiple clown sightings have been reported since a Greenville, S.C. apartment complex warned residents about a person or persons trying to “lure children into the woods”.
The first incident happened on Sunday, August 21st, and involved kids seeing clowns in the woods bordering the Fleetwood Manor apartment complex.
Cops spoke to some children who said they had been tempted with money to go into the woods, and one who said the clown was taking photographs of them.
Children have told police that “the clowns stay in a house located near a pond at the end of a man-made trail in the woods”.
“There [have] been several [conversations] and a lot of complaints to the office regarding a clown or a person dressed in clown clothing talking to children or trying to lure children into the woods”, a letter sent by the property management stated.
They are advising people to not dress in clown outfits.
“I wanted everybody to come out, join me and we can patrol whatever is in these woods, find out what it is and put a stop to it”, he said.
“They only stand in an area to be seen and watch the reaction of individuals”, Miller explained.
That same afternoon, a 13 year-old boy spoke with the news and told them a clown knocked on the front door of his home.
He said officers reviewed surveillance video in the area where the clown was reportedly seen and found nothing.
Carl Woody with Joy Set Entertainment hopes people will look beyond the headlines and understand that real clowns would never try to frighten anyone. He said it is also unknown if it is all connected to a movie promotion for an upcoming film that involves clowns.
While police have yet to substantiate the reports, they are taking them seriously.
Montfort suspects the clown sightings are not part of a sinister plot but rather part of a marketing strategy.
“It’s abandoned”, Flood said.
“We plan to publicly ask whoever is behind this senseless action of scaring child to stop before someone gets hurt”, Wilson said, according to CNN.
