Cubs to acquire Dan Haren from Marlins
It’s not official yet, nor do we know who’s coming back to the Cubs, but it appears they have acquired righthander Dan Haren from the Marlins.
The Chicago Cubs were paying the trade market to find pitching gold, but they weren’t able to land either of their top targets before the deadline passed.
It isn’t the splash that many were expecting the Cubs to try and make, although it doesn’t necessarily mean that Theo Epstein is done dealing.
According to multiple reports, the Marlins have traded Haren to the Cubs in exchange for two minor-league players. Haren, 34, who can become a free agent after this season, is 7-7 with a 3.42 ERA with a 1.093 WHIP in 21 starts. They had been connected to frontline starters like Cole Hamels and David Price, as noted by CSNChicago.com, but both players wound up getting dealt to other teams.
The Cubs are adding depth to their starting rotation.
The Sun-Times first reported the trade. The 34-year-old isn’t a long-term investment, playing out the final year of his contract, and didn’t cost almost as much in terms of talent as Hamels and Price.
Soto is now batting.275/.388/.314 with 47 runs scored and 18 RBIs in 88 games at Double-A Tennessee while Pineyro is 7-5 with a 3.69 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 92 strikeouts in 19 starts (107 1/3 innings) with Tennessee as well.
Despite a disappointing stretch for a pitcher that made three All-Star teams with the Athletics and Diamondbacks, Haren brings value to the Cubs rotation, as Baseball-Reference pointed out Friday.
