Two NJ Transit buses collide in Newark, officials say
WABC is reporting at least 1 dead, 19 injured in crash.
Scenes from the accident show a t-bone crash, where one bus was almost split in half, and the second suffered significant damage to the front.
NJ Transit buses have outward and inward facing cameras that come on during a crash or hard braking or a sudden turn to record incidents. The bus driver on the 59 bus was killed. The intersection was closed to traffic and NJ Transit said service in downtown Newark was experiencing delays and detours because of the accident.
Family friend Jasmina Bosnjakovic said Garcia’s family is “devastated” at losing a hardworking woman who was devoted to her grandchildren.
A good Samaritan, Khalil Smith, told WCBS 2, “I was standing at the bus stop down here when the 13 [bus] pulled down”.
“We’re praying for all of those in the hospital”, Mayor Ras Baraka said.
The driver was the only person on the 59 Line bus.
Essex County prosecutors say 49-year-old Jesy Garcia was taken to a hospital after Friday morning’s accident but died there several hours later. The T-bone collision apparently happened after one bus crashed into the side of another, knocking it onto its other side.
The number of injured and the extent of their injuries is not known. One of the buses is on its side.
NJ Transit Interim Executive Director Dennis Martin said both Barthelus and Roberts were “in good standing” with NJ Transit. One of the buses is on its side.
Two commuter buses have collided in New Jersey’s largest city.
The passenger-filled bus was on its regular route, from Irvington to Clifton, picking up and discharging passengers when the crash occurred, police said.
There is no word on injuries.
