Three Travelers Infected With Zika In Missouri
The Health Ministry has downplayed the need for public disclosure on areas Malaysia’s first Zika patient had visited upon her return from Singapore on Aug 21 as it may cause panic.
Zika virus has been spreading across South and Central America since early 2015 and has now emerged in Florida, researchers said.
There is a scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly in newborn babies and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Of those who do have symptoms, the most common are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).
New Zika cases will continue to emerge, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
The statement did not say where the other two cases were from. Since the first case was discovered on August 27, new cases have been continuously reported.
With the city already battling a dengue, chikungunya and viral fever outbreak, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a Zika alert in the country.
The ministry is also considering sending confirmed cases home to recuperate, but the infected persons are advised to take precautions to prevent themselves from getting bitten by mosquitoes, Khor said while attending a community outreach event in western Singapore on Sunday morning.
The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light only previous year in Brazil, which has since confirmed more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly. It said local transmission was highly likely because the man had no recent history of travelling outside Malaysia.
Furthermore, acknowledging that the impact of Zika virus is a long term concern, the Committee recommended that the Director General considers developing an appropriate infrastructure and response plan within the World Health Organization to provide longer term coordination and accountability for ensuring an effective response.
Fortunately, there is a rapidly growing body of facts and evidence that we now do know, and they include some extremely important recommendations that everyone in West Virginia can follow to stop a potential Zika virus outbreak here and its potentially harmful effects on pregnant women and their future children.
The WHO has declared the Zika outbreak an global health emergency, and if Malaysia’s fight against dengue is any indication, it will struggle with Zika.
The death was not due to Zika, which usually has mild symptoms, he said. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika.
Malaysia recorded a total of 120,836 dengue cases past year, including 336 fatalities – the most since 1995, according to government data. The virus was first identified back in 1947 and seemed relatively innocuous.
