2 employees shot in lobby of central California county jail
At some point, officers deployed a Taser on Vang, but Vang still refused to surrender.
Two sheriff’s office employees are hospitalized after being shot in the lobby of a central California county jail Saturday.
If anyone has any further information about suspect Vang, they’re asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (559) 600-3111.
Authorities say he was the gunman who seriously wounded two unarmed corrections officers in the main lobby of the Fresno County Jail in downtown Fresno, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016.
Police say Vang began to show signs of weird behavior before Davila and Scanlan approached Vang and told him to take a seat.
Juanita Davila, an 18-year veteran, is listed in critical but stable condition. Mims said he entered the lobby just after 8:30 a.m. saying he was there to visit someone.
The couty sheriff’s office initially described the incident as an “active shooter situation”, but said officers have since stabilized the scene, ABC 30 reported.
Vang shot both Davila and Toamalama Scanlan in the neck or head.
Botti said Vang returned fire, but no one was hit. He was previously sentenced in 1998 to 19 years in prison on numerous rape charges involving teens aged 14 and under. By 11:50 a.m.it appeared that only M Street in front of the jail remained closed to traffic. The parolee had no criminal violations since his release. Vang then tried to cut in line and began shooting when officer Juanita Davila approached him.
Botti said Vang will be booked into jail on several felonies.
