NASCAR Sprint Cup race suspended until Sunday
Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag at the rain-delayed Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday. The race was delayed due to inclement weather on Saturday, August 20.
Harvick’s vehicle owner and fellow competitor, Tony Stewart, struggled in his final race at Bristol Motor Speedway, bringing home a thirtieth place finish.
This was supposed to be Bristol Motor Speedway’s annual night race. When the track dried, the race returned to yellow on Lap 446 with Harvick in the lead, followed by Hamlin, Johnson, Dillon and Jamie McMurray.
Fittingly for a race halted because of Saturday night storms, Harvick had to sit out one last rain delay before pulling away on the restart and cruising to victory.
Just when it seemed a clear run for Keselowski, he slowed on the pace laps and limped to pit road as his tank ran dry.
“All of our cars were all very fast”, Hamlin said. When a driver posts such a huge point total and you don’t have them in your lineup, you simply can’t make up the difference.
Harvick pointed out a couple of other similar circuits in need of Bristol’s grippy approach. We made mistakes or whatever the case may be. “I think that would be the first place I would attack and do something different”.
LOGANO THREE-PEAT?: Joey Logano has won the past two summer night races at Bristol and believes he can make it three in a row this weekend.
Harvick gushed how Bristol’s gamble could become a blueprint to improve the on-track product.
Kyle Busch led 256 laps, but was knocked out in a crash.
“I wanted him to take a victory lap with me to say good-bye and thank all the fans one last time here at Bristol”. But to get back into Victory Lane here at Bristol feels really good.
Sprint Cup drivers got a final week off last weekend and now race uninterrupted through the season-ender in Florida on November 20.
But Dillon & Co. aren’t just looking for “good points days”- they’re looking for a win.
Allgaier apologized to Busch. Rain at Pocono Raceway three weeks ago pushed that finish until Monday when rookie Chris Buescher won his first Sprint Cup title as continued bad weather shortened that race. Buescher left here 13 points ahead of David Ragan. The race is scheduled to begin at 2pm and will be broadcasted by NBCSN.
NOTES: Jeff Gordon continued as substitute driver in the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt Jr., and he came in 10th. Gordon won’t drive in MI because of a prior commitment.
Kevin Harvick picked up his second win of the season, holding off a charging Ricky Stenhouse Jr.to win the rescheduled Bristol night race. As the race neared the halfway point, Busch and Edwards, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, engaged in a thrilling battle for the lead as they darted in and out of lapped traffic. Kyle Larson also some damage in the wreck after being nailed by Brian Scott. The Vols and Hokies play September 10 and then Western Carolina and East Tennessee play a week later.
IT’S FOOTBALL TIME: Bristol now goes gridiron. The infield will become the playing surface in a construction project that involves more than 10,000 tons of stones for the base.
