Bradford in fold; Vikings not declaring starter for opener

The third-year quarterback is recovering from that gruesome, season-ending knee injury he suffered last week.

Willie Beavers, a fourth-round pick this spring, was added to the Vikings practice squad on Sunday after not making the final 53-man roster on Saturday.

New Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford spoke to reporters during a news conference Monday after the team’s practice. The Eagles traded Bradford Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, to the Minnesota Vikings for a pair of draft picks.

After today’s practice at Winter Park, head coach Mike Zimmer said that the team had not decided on a starter yet, and that they would split first-team snaps this week in practice between Hill and newly-acquired Sam Bradford. Those reps should be helpful for Bradford whether he gets the nod this weekend or not and a week on the sideline listening to the calls and otherwise observing the offense probably wouldn’t hurt either, although the price paid for Bradford makes it hard to rule out a quicker timeline.

Both Hill and Bradford will take turns with the first team this week.

The Vikings dealt two draft picks, including a first-rounder in 2017, for Bradford after Teddy Bridgewater sustained a massive injury to his left knee.

Bradford was asked about Pat Shurmur, his offensive coordinator with the Rams and the Eagles, who is tight ends coach in Minnesota. One unidentified National Football League exec said to CBS Sports, “I can not believe [Roseman] got a 1 for Bradford”.

“You only have 53 spots, and you’re trying to figure out how you can get 10 more on the practice squad”, Zimmer said. They will play in Philadelphia in the season finale on New Year’s Day.

NOTES: Bradford had been to Minnesota once in his life before the trade.

“I never thought that I’d have another quarterback throughout my career other than him”, Zimmer said. He was let go last week by Miami, where he played in six games in 2015.
