National Hurricane Center: Newton is now a hurricane
A hurricane warning was in effect for Cabo San Lucas and the nearby coastline.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of Mexico’s coast from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes and from north of La Paz to San Evaristo.
Hurricane Watches have already be posted for the Mexican Baja of California in anticipation of a strong tropical storm or weak hurricane at landfall on Tuesday. The storm was moving northwest at 26 kilometres per hour with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h.
The hurricane center said the storm was likely to continue north into Arizona as a tropical depression later in the week.
The same weather system lashed areas of the south-western state of Guerrero over the weekend before strengthening to a tropical storm.
Newton was located about 215 miles (350 km) southeast of Cabo San Lucas Monday evening.
In the resort of Acapulco, floods and landslides affected dozens of homes and schools and about 200 people had to be rescued from a housing complex.
Torrential rain that began on Saturday caused more than 30 mudslides across the state, forcing main roads to close.
