Xena: Warrior Princess Reboot Planned!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are on board for the project, which is still in the very early stages of development.
Lucy Lawless would likely be on the older end of the spectrum to reprise her role as a warrior princess, but without knowing the premise or synopsis of the show, it’s too early to tell.
The producers are shooting for a “modern reboot” on the new Xena, which translates to “a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation” in the vein of the aforementioned young Ms. Everdeen from The Hunger Games.
Lawless starred as a fierce warrior who took an oath to defend those incapable of defending themselves.
As for Xena herself, there’s no word of what role Lucy Lawless will have in the reboot, if any. “I’m always being peppered with questions [about] when the Xena movie is coming”. Of course, unless they decide to age the characters several hundred years, it’s unlikely the show will maintain the continuity of the original series, though anything’s possible. Lawless was most recently seen at Comic-Con global in San Diego as she helped promote Raimi’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” series, on which she plays Ruby. “But that’s a piss-poor excuse anymore”. It seems there’s been conflict over who actually owns the rights to Xena and that small snag has kept Lawless from from going to crowdfunding sources to finance her Xena revival. Don’t waste this opportunity.
Xena was originally introduced as a supporting character in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. But if NBC can tap into that magical mixture of fantasy, cheesiness, and quirkiness that made Xena a success, it could easily be a flawless partner for Grimm on Friday nights. Currently, the network is looking for a writer to bring Xena’s new adventures to life. For its part, NBC is also readying aCoach follow-up with star Craig T. Nelson. Do you want some more Xena?
