Halep beats Suarez Navarro at US Open
I’ve been playing for a really long time. He proceeded to win the next four games to regain control on the way to a 6-4, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory Monday.
Williams has had a strong tournament so far with some tough matches to open her campaign at Flushing Meadows after winning her first grand slam of the year at Wimbledon. Shvedova defeated her sister, plus Venus lost Monday, and that equals an amped-up Serena. She has faced just one break point in four matches. Previously, Roger Federer held the Grand Slam record with 307 wins.
Her quarterfinal opponent will be fifth-seeded Simona Halep, who advanced to the quarterfinals for the second straight year with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over 11th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro.
“I couldn’t be just mad that I didn’t make it because I still had a chance to win the tie-break”, Pliskova said. “It’s just a huge challenge for me”.
The victor will meet either Simona Halep or Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarterfinals.
Pliskova also spurned match points, including three when serving at 6-5, 40-0 in the final set.
Although her 36-year-old sibling is active, many of Williams’ contemporaries have come and gone, including Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, who are both younger, and Martina Hingis, who is only a year older. But I worked it out, won, got through, and I didn’t play good. She won an incredible 93 percent of her first serves, 28 of 30. Now they meet in the round of 16 under the lights at Ashe, where the fourth-seeded Radwanska will be seeking her first U.S. Open quarterfinal.
Konjuh, who is 18 and ranked only 92nd, had never been past the third round at a major until this tournament.
Talking about her historic win, Serena said, “It’s pretty awesome. what better place to do it than here”, referring to the venue where she claimed her first Grand Slam title in 1999.
But the in-form Czech – who shocked world number two Angelique Kerber in the final at Cincinnati in August – settled her own late nerves to pull off the upset in front of a partisan Arthur Ashe stadium crowd.
Her run to the quarters means the American must at least reach the final to stay top for a 187th consecutive which would, of course, be a record. No. 7 Roberta Vinci, Caroline Wozniacki vs. Anastasija Sevastova.
