No Williams-Williams rematch at Open: Venus out in 4th round
She helped her case on Monday by passing Roger Federer’s Open era record for the most singles Grand Slam match wins – regardless of gender – with her fourth-round win over Yaroslava Shvedova at the U.S. Open.
Serena Williams sealed a record-breaking 308th grand slam victory by beating Yaroslava Shvedova in the US Open fourth round.
“Oh wow, it is really exciting, this is where it all started so it is always so magical out here for me but 308 sounds pretty good”, Williams said after moving a step closer to a record seventh U.S. Open title.
Moments after Venus lost, a melancholy Serena walked onto the court, but if her sister’s result were a factor then, it certainly was not during the match.
Williams was philosophical about her failure to convert a match point against Pliskova’s serve in the 10th game of the third.
“I’m really happy I could win this match”.
“But I just wanted to beat her, not the crowd, (it) is impossible to beat 23,000 people”.
Serena’s 308-42 record in Grand Slam matches equates to a winning percentage of almost 91 percent. “I’ve been playing for a really long time, but also, you know, given that consistency up there”.
10th-seeded Pliskova will next face 18-year-old Croatian Ana Konjuh, who upset Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 to book her place in the quarters.
Venus Williams, a seven-times grand slam singles victor and twice U.S. Open champion, has enjoyed some recent success, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the final at Stanford.
“It’s a huge number, I think it’s very significant actually”.
Wawrinka saw off Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko 6-4 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 to set up a quarter-final against 2009 champion Del Potro, who led Dominic Thiem 6-3 3-2 when the Austrian retired with a knee injury.
“I just feel like I’m going out there doing what I need to do”, Serena told reporters.
Williams said that record wasn´t necessarily a guide to the challenge Halep would pose. Everyone I’m playing is playing like they’re No. 1.
Venus, aged 36, was bidding to become the oldest grand slam quarter-finalist since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1994 but Pliskova snatched a thrilling 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/3) victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium. She’s coming off a third-round loss at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and entered the U.S. Open having played only three matches since Wimbledon.
