Lawrie out of his own match play tournament
With the WGC Bridgestone being played next week in Ohio followed by the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits the following week the European Tour’s stars are either in or heading for the US to prepare for a demanding two weeks. As one of their nominated charities, Dean’s is helping to raise funds and will combine many of their promotional activities and events with the charity.
The Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play lost its host in the second round as the former Open champion delivered a “horrendous” performance against Chris Doak. I’m hoping some of my best golf might still be ahead of me, and show that I can still compete on the Tour.
Holding a one hole lead down the 18th Doak wildly sliced his drive to beside the hospitality area on the wide right.
‘It’s fantastic to beat anybody, but Paul being such a good player and being the host makes it a little bit extra special I guess, ‘ Doak said. Home advantage is important but I do not think it is the decisive thing.
The 37-year-old, who wears a white flat cap, will take on England’s David Howell in the next round.
‘I didn’t manage to hole that and of course I go and lose the next, but am delighted to get through and rest the legs for tomorrow.
‘There was a real buzz about the place from Tuesday onwards and it’s a really nice addition to our calendar.’.
However Doak rolled his putt to within a foot to half and win by one hole.
Ramsay will fancy his chances of going all the way, not only because the tournament is on home soil in Aberdeen but also because the Scot is the course record holder at Murcar Links, having shot an outstanding 62 as an amateur in the Scottish Challenge in 2006.
