Say goodbye to the iPhone’s headphone jack

You’ve got options. Apple will be including a pair of headphones in the box with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that connect to the phone’s lightning port. It’s been available as a developer beta and public beta for several weeks, and recent updates made it clear Apple was close to announcing the official launch date.

Apple Inc unveiled an iPhone 7 with high-resolution cameras and no headphone jack at its annual launch event Wednesday, though the biggest surprise was the debut of a three-decade-old Nintendo game franchise, Super Mario Bros, on the smartphone. There’s also redesigned Maps, Photos, Apple Music and News apps, and the Home app, delivering a simple and secure way to manage home automation products in one place.

The iPhone 7 will cost $769.

The device, which is available for pre-order on Friday Sept. 16, is water resistant.

For Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, the iPhone’s 3.5-millimeter audio jack has felt something like the last months of an ill-fated if amicable relationship: familiar and comfortable, but ultimately an impediment to a better life ahead. The iPhone 7 models ship September 16 and will start at $649.

The larger iPhone 7 Plus also features a second camera lens to allow 2x optical zoom. Industry analysts say it’s because last fall’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus didn’t contain many new features or improvements.

But the key feature in the iPhone 7 Plus is that, as expected, it is the first to offer a dual lens camera.

The company has posted sharp growth in its software services business in recent quarters as it seeks to reduce reliance on hardware after an extraordinary year that has seen a waning trajectory for iPhone sales and a recent decision by the European Union ordering repayment of billions in allegedly illegal tax benefits.

Still, it’s not clear that the iPhone 7 enhancements will spur Apple’s hoped-for upgrade rush among current iPhone users, who may be growing less inclined to toss out their existing devices on a yearly cycle.

If you decide to upgrade to the newest iPhone, you’re going to lose something that’s likely pretty important to you: the headphone jack.

But this same adapter will also need to be used in cars which don’t have Bluetooth connectivity, which could put a dampener on in-car radio streaming via iPhone unless the adapter goes everywhere the iPhone 7 does.

Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 2, which is waterproof to be able to withstand submersion to a depth of 50 meters and includes built-in Global Positioning System to provide location-based services.

The upgraded Apple Watch will include water resistance to 50 metres and Global Positioning System, to allow users to track a workout without bringing along a smartphone. The original Apple Watch, now called Series 1, will start at $269. CEO Tim Cook said the popular Japanese game had been missing until now.

Apple partnered with Niantic to bring Pokemon Go to the Apple Watch.

And that’s probably because, unlike with past tech Apple’s killed, there’s no clearly superior standard waiting to fill in for the humble headphone jack.
