Rory McIlroy wins Deutsche Bank Championship with superb final round
Rory McIlroy earned his 12th PGA Tour victory on Monday.
What was your favorite moment from Rory McIlroy’s Deutsche Bank win?
By contrast a dejected McIlroy, looking as if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, such as we witnessed when he missed the cut at the US Open and the US PGA Championship this summer, is a real buzz wrecker.
The Englishman helped Henrik Stenson win The Open and Justin Rose the Olympic gold medal and might find virtually the entire profession beating a path to his door in Southport given the instant panacea he seems to have uncovered for McIlroy’s ills.
No need to look hard to see why McIlroy is back in the winner’s circle.
He ended it in style, too.
“He just waits. and he kept doing his thing”, Scott said.
The world number five produced a superb final round 65 in Boston to win by two shots.
The Englishman hit a monster drive on the par 5, leaving himself 223 yards, from where he knocked a 4-iron almost 60 feet from the pin.
Casey needed an eagle at No. 18 to tie McIlroy after his par at No. 17, but missed a 58-foot putt that would have forced a playoff and parred the hole.
McIlroy, who had not tasted victory on the PGA Tour since the Wells Fargo Championship in May a year ago, pinpointed his remarkable recovery after a frightful start to Friday’s opening round as key to his success at the TPC Boston.
But it was McIlroy who grabbed the world headlines with his 20 career win.
The dust barely settled on Rory McIlroy’s triumphant come-from-behind victory at TPC Boston on Labor Day when the attention abruptly shifted to the BMW Championship.
He 3-putted from the front right edge at No.5 for another bogey, but made the turn at 1-over par with a birdie at No. 7. “I just went with the momentum”. He managed to get back to even par at the end of the opening round, and he was on his way.
And with the temperatures having dropped appreciably ahead of Hermine making its presence felt, McIlroy turned up the heat on the final day picking up five birdies over his outward half including three in succession with the best being holing an 18-footer at the par three eighth hole.
McIlroy could not have timed his return to form better.
McIlroy had seven birdies and a lone bogey in a round of 65 which was played in hard, windy conditions. He indeed did that with a birdie at 12 followed by the bogey-birdie finish.
The big shot never left him.
NORTON, Mass. (AP) – A new putting coach. How’d that work out? Talk about quick results. A 16-month PGA Tour winless drought had McIlroy, a four-time major victor, being treated as if he hadn’t won a tournament in 16 years.
Brian Harman is Casey’s nearest challenger after he hit a 68 on Sunday, while Smylie Kaufman, USPGA champion Jimmy Walker and Kevin Chappell, who held the overnight lead on Saturday, are a further shot behind. His 65 tied him with Adam Scott for the low round of the day.
Reed retains the FedEx Cup lead after this week, but McIlroy jumps from 38th to fourth, ensuring a trip to the Tour Championship in a year that had given him so much trouble. At the very least, his spirits are up again. “I have won Race to Dubais and I have won order of merits and been a money victor on the PGA Tour but never lifted the FedEx Cup itself”, McIlroy said.
He was six shots behind leader Paul Casey, however in the final round he won by a two-shot victory.
