Trump Responds to Accusations of Flip-Flopping on Iraq War
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to return to OH for the second time in a week with a campaign stop Thursday afternoon at a charter school in Cleveland.
NOTE: Earlier, Hillary Clinton said she had “taken responsibility” for her earlier support of Iraq war, but Trump “was for the war in Iraq”.
The appearance at the school, in the heavily African-American Woodland Hills neighborhood, was part of Trump’s ongoing effort to smooth over his “politically incorrect” political persona that many black voters and others have perceived as racist. Trump spoke about his plans to build up the military if elected. I think he’s doing a very good job.
He added: “You can not have prosperity without safety”.
“There’s no failed policy more in need of urgent change than our government-run education monopoly”, he said, arguing that school choice would create a competitive education market that benefits students.
It is chartered by the Ohio Council of Community Schools, which is designated as the chartering agency by the University of Toledo.
Charter-school operator Constellation said more than 10 of its school buildings in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties will be closed Thursday.
Trump has claimed he was against the Iraq War from the beginning, but there is no proof of that.
Radio host Howard Stern in 2002 asked Trump if he supported the looming invasion. Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, supported many school choice initiatives during his time as IN governor.
The remarks come during a week in which Mr. Trump has worked to counter lingering questions about whether he is too unpredictable and lacks the temperament to be president. Seated to Trump’s right was Debroah Mays, the head of the school. The company’s chief executive officer, Ron Packard, was present.
Noble Academy Cleveland in Euclid (YOO’-klid) is closed on Thursday as well.
The school has been found chronically deficient by the state. You can go back and look at the record. It was so an incredible job.
Several days after the invasion, Trump did say that war is a “mess”, though, again, that was after the invasion. You turn on the news, and you see politics every day.
In the 39-minute speech, Mr. Trump mixed attacks on Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton with prepared text that he was getting off the TelePrompTer.
Trump was last in Cleveland on Monday, when he participated in a “roundtable discussion” with a few organized-labor figures before dropping by the Canfield Fair in Mahoning County.
