Brendan Rodgers cannot wait to experience the Old Firm derby volume
We appreciate the significance of this game, but like we said going into the cup semi previous year, it’s about what we do.
For Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, it will be a first experience of a fixture many say is unlike any other.
“We have seen at Ibrox when it is 0-0 after 20 minutes that the crowd starts to turn”. Fittingly, despite having only played three and four matches each, the two Glasgow sides sit atop the Scottish Premiership, and they both look good for yet another head-to-head title challenge this season.
“We have enough players who are not daunted by this game”.
Celtic, on the other hand, are like night and day. I have been involved in a Swansea-Cardiff derby, which was very intense, I have been involved in the Liverpool-Everton derby, which were huge games, Liverpool-Manchester United were big games.
The Scouse pairing will be key in protecting Rangers’ vulnerable defence against the likes of Leigh Griffiths and Scott Sinclair in the Celtic attack.
The Irishman guided the champions to three wins out of three in the opening weeks of the season to send them top of the table ahead of this weekend’s Glasgow derby.
McCoist believes Rangers can take encouragement from their William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final win over the Hoops at Hampden Park last season, albeit in a penalty shoot-out.
Speaking to the official Rangers website, Warburton said: “This is the first league encounter, last season’s semi-final had 50/50 in terms of fans but Saturday will be heavily weighted one way so it will be a different type of atmosphere and a different weight of expectation”.
“Whether that’s the increased level of opposition, or whether that’s trying to bed new signings, we have turned over 20 players in the last two summers”. I think that is unrealistic.
“We are disappointed we have maybe not performed as well, but we are still going into it with belief in what we are doing”. If we go in there and do what we do well, we’ll be fine. We know we have the game to hurt anybody.
“It’s about being consistent in the quality of your work and it’s no different in this industry as well”.
Rodgers is in the process of rebuilding his reputation having been sacked by Liverpool a year ago and he will know that a win against their most bitter rivals this weekend will be a great way to endear himself to the Celtic faithful.
Rangers visit Celtic Park on Saturday. “It will still be hard for him to stay in the Celtic team every week because they have options – and Brendan can adapt his style and system for different games”.
