Woman died in holding cell while awaiting hearing
A woman who had been arrested on a petty larceny charge has been found dead in a Mount Vernon Police Department holding cell. She is the fifth black woman, at least, to die behind bars this month. She returned to the holding cell briefly that night, before she was taken for fingerprinting at 2 a.m. She was found dead 12 hours later.
Gonzalez, however, said Turner was healthy and feeling very well after undergoing weight-loss surgery a year ago.
The probe is to determine whether a full investigation into the death is necessary, according to the Yonkers Daily Voice. Turner was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. “She was a wife”.
Authorities said Turner, a mother of eight, was arrested Saturday for allegedly swiping crab’s legs from a Restaurant Depot wholesale food store. “I want to thank the citizens of Mount Vernon and from all over for their patience while a thorough investigation moves forward”.
The authorities there have ruled that death a suicide.
As a result, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has sent a team of investigators to Mount Vernon courtesy of a recent order issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that grants him the power to investigate “certain matters involving matters involving the death of an unarmed civilian, in custody or not, caused by a law enforcement officer”. When cops checked her cell Monday afternoon, she was found unresponsive.
While it is still a tragedy that Raynette passed, her family believes her death was an incident of police neglect rather than police brutality.
Turner said he waited in court all day for his wife to be arraigned Monday and was told to come back the next day. She was returned to her cell a little over two hours later.
Most police agencies will release those arrested on minor crimes and violations with a desk appearance ticket, indicating when they must show up on their own for arraignment. “An autopsy is being performed today and we are awaiting the results of it”.
“I don’t know what happened”, he said.
Turner’s husband told the Journal News this afternoon that he plans to look into an independent autopsy.
