Jamie Murray makes fourth career Grand Slam final at US Open
“We’ve had a great tournament so far”.
“He didn’t say it to Bruno but he said to me: “We’re going to win the US Open”.
Murray lost out to the same pair alongside John Peers in the final here 12 months ago but he and Soares were too good for the defending champions on the new Grandstand court.
The difference has been that Soares exudes cool in tight moments – and there were plenty on Wednesday as they took on the top seeds and defending champions, Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.
If a set of tennis can be described as flawless, that which Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares inflicted on Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the first 41 minutes of their semi-final win on day 11 of the 2016 US Open is surely a candidate.
It will be Murray’s fourth grand-slam doubles event final in 18 months after the Scot was a runner-up at both Flushing Meadows and Wimbledon past year. It’s not much fun to lose in finals.
While 34-year-old partner, Soares, added: “I’m very proud, they’re a very tough team”.
Referring to Herbert and Mahut, he added: “They’re the best team this year, defending champions, playing an incredible level, but I thought we did extremely well”. Herbert and Mahut will be there as well, along with the six other best doubles partnerships.
They argued with umpire Marika Cicak over delays in play due to spectator movement, although Jamie claimed to be unaware that it was the same official his brother had fallen out with 24 hours previously. They split at the end of the season and now he could be looking at two Major titles in one year. The Serb has been struggling with injuries, but has been aided by a walkover and two retirements, the latest when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga limped out of their quarter-final with knee trouble.
Andy Murray was knocked out by Kei Nishikori after a five-set quarter-final. The first time is never easy. I’m going to do whatever it takes to win.
“I’ve got some experience of Grand Slam finals now and my only advice to myself is “don’t lose”. The American, who was bidding to pass the record of 22 Open Era Grand Slams she shares with Steffi Graf, said she was hampered by a knee injury.
