SF 49ers owner backs Kaepernick, pledges $1M
A police union says it is again encouraging its officers to work at San Francisco 49ers home games despite statements about police by quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Colin Kaepernick has brought some of his San Francisco teammates closer with his national anthem protests against social injustice.
Criticism from members of the military, law enforcement and National Football League fans reached a fever-pitch after members of the media noticed that Kaepernick had been wearing practice socks in training camp that depict police officers as pigs. He has made a decision to donate the first $1 million he receives from jersey proceeds.
York said the 49ers’ donations are separate, telling reporters: “I’m not sure if he’s figured out where he’s putting his money”. I have to help these communities.
On Wednesday, Gillmor released a statement asking the officers not to boycott the games, even though they have every right to do so. “Silicon Valley Community Foundation is the largest community foundation in the world, managing $7.3 billion in assets and more than 1,800 philanthropic funds globally”.
“Discrimination is wrong, and we believe it has no place in North Carolina or anywhere in our country”, York said in a statement at the time.
On Thursday, the 49ers followed his lead. The San Francisco Foundation has served the people of the Bay Area since 1948, nearly as long as the 49ers franchise.
After Kaepernick took a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner” prior to the 49ers’ final preseason game against the San Diego Chargers, he told reporters he planned to donate $1 million of his 2016 salary to community organizations.
York said the team is excited to work with the two foundations to develop a plan to help “find unifying solutions to these pressing issues”. We are an incubator for community investment, original ideas, and passionate leadership in the Bay Area.
